HOSPITAL INSTALLATION (detail)
This is the first piece I made about my brother's injury. At the time, I knew he had survived a 9.5 hour surgery after shattering a vertebrae in his neck but I still didn't know if he was going to make it. My parents rushed out to the hospital in California right away and I stayed back in Chicago to hold down the fort for a couple of weeks. I really had no idea what to expect. I wanted to see him but at the same time I was afraid to. On occasion I would feel flat out terror for him but by far my strongest experience was the sudden awareness of an endless desert between us and overwhelming loneliness. While I waited for my turn to go visit him, all I could think about were clocks ticking and endless jumbles of tubes.
