Art > SPINE

My younger brother, Jay, is a quadriplegic as the result of a rock climbing accident in 2005.
This is the second piece I made about his injury. The mixed fiber papers represent raw flesh and vulnerability. Each flesh paper has a printed message of support for Jay from friends, family, co-workers, and the greater community. The papers were then carefully sewn back together on a paper spine. "Red Wheel Chair" was installed in an alcove painted a red fleshy color. The over all image represents a raw, uncomfortable, vulnerable, and frightening situation. However, if the viewer is willing to step into the installation and take a closer look, they can see the careful threads that hold everything together and read the messages of hope.
